The World Uses a Variety of Different Energy Sources

The world uses many different energy sources. In 2018 fossil fuels like gas, oil and coal, comprised more than 81 percent energy consumed. Renewables, like solar power, wind power biomass and hydroelectricity, account for 14 percent. Nuclear energy accounts for another 5 percent. Different countries utilize different sources of energy to meet economic needs and environmental concerns.

Nature is a rich source of energy in a number of forms: sunlight winds, waves oceans, and more. When harnessed, and transformed into more practical forms of energy, like heat or electricity, these are referred to as primary sources. When the energy source is exhausted, they become non-renewable energy sources.

A lot of fossil fuels and a few of the other nonrenewable energy sources can be harmful to the environment. For instance mining for oil could degrade the world’s forests. Fracking (hydraulic fracture) could cause water pollution and earthquakes. Carbon dioxide is released when coal is burned which contributes to global warming.

Fortunately that many of the most promising energy sources are renewable and sustainable. Solar, wind, and hydropower can generate, for instance electricity without having to dig up new sources.

Other sources of sustainable energy are emerging, like wave power and tidal energy. However, to be used on a large scale these technologies need effective distribution networks. They need to be constructed, which requires the use of non-renewable energy sources. These sources aren’t able to meet the majority of our energy needs. However, it’s important to keep in mind that costs for renewable energy-related equipment have fallen dramatically over the past few years, and efficiency is increasing rapidly.
